Indian Immigration to Trinidad began in 1845 and went on till 1917. In 1845 when the Fatel Razack sailed into the Gulf of Paria it brought in a new culture. The Indians made it through a long and arduous journey with many hardships. They were brought to work in the sugar plantations in the Caribbean. Celebrations are an important part of the Indian culture. The Indians were allowed to observe their rituals and celebrate their festivals in their new country. The Indians celebrate Divali, Eid-ul-Fitr, Phagwa and Hoosay which have over the years become part of the Trinidad and Tobago culture. The Indian food has also become part of the Trinidad and Tobago cuisine. May 30th is celebrated as the Indian arrival day. This comes at the end of the month and is a public holiday. Indian Arrival Day is celebrated on 30th May and it commemorates the arrival of the first Indian Indentured laborers from India to Trinidad. They arrived in May1845, on the ship Fatel Razack. This event has been celebrated among the East Indian community in Trinidad and Tobago for years but it was only in 1994 that it was declared an official public holiday. This is called Indian Arrival Day.
The Indians have integrated very well into the Caribbean culture though holding on to some of their customs. Music has always been as important to the Indians. So you find many Indian musical instruments used in the Caribbean. Some of them are the tassa, tabla, dholak, majeera, bansoori, sitar and harmonium. The World Steelband Music Festival started in 1952 as a category in the National Music Festival. But due to the interest and the big number of participants, the show is now staged independently at Pantrinbago. Each year the festival grows bigger and the standard of music gets better. Many top bands and pianists take part in it from all over the world. The finals are hosted outside Trinidad and Tobago.
The competition has different categories like the Orchestra, Single Pan and Minor which includes Soloists, Duets, Quartets, and Ensemble. Each band performs both a test piece and a choice piece in each round. If you visit Tobago this May you could be in time for the Laventille steel band festival. Many good bands take part in it and you could be there watching and dancing the night away. Trinidad and Tobago also has a host of other events happening in May like the harvest festivals and some golf tournaments.
